What if the story of Little Red Riding Hood were told from the perspective of the Big Bad Wolf? Imagine how that opportunist Cinderella would be described by her step-sisters. Who’s the fairest of them all? It all depends on your point of view. Of all the elements of writing fiction, point of view (POV) seems to cause the most head scratching. First person? Third person close? Third person omniscient? What’s the difference in all these POV permutations and what difference does it make anyhow? In this workshop, we’ll examine what all these terms mean and explore examples that illustrate the various uses of point of view and why they’re effective.

In this series of monthly workshops, we’ll explore the many and varied aspects of creative writing from the writer’s voice (what is it, how do you find it, and what do you do with it once you’ve discovered it?) to elements of style (sentences and other structures, telling details, show and tell), to questions of craft (plot vs. character, description vs. action, narrative strategies) and other literary nooks and crannies. Each workshop will include examples from noted writers, in-class exercises, lively dialogue exchanges and an opportunity to work with other writers in a supportive, friendly community.
