“Anyone can be a writer. The trick is staying a writer.” – Harlan Ellison

pen in hand cuIf you want to write a novel, screenplay, short story – if you want to write anything, the first step is to start writing. It’s the next step that’s the tricky one and the one where most would-be writers trip up: keep writing. This five-week course will show you how to get started writing, and keep going.

We’ll work from prompts and exercises that will take you deep into the belly of your writing. You may be surprised and even amazed by what you have to say. You’ll fill pages and pages in your writer’s notebook and come away with story seedlings, poetic uprisings, characters sketches, and more. And through it all you’ll find out how and why writing practice works, and how you can become a regular practitioner.

We’ll use A Writer’s Book of Days for our text, and mine the book for instructions on the craft of writing—how to find the telling detail, how writing from the senses brings your writing to life, what stuck looks like and how to get unstuck. Through in-class exercises, we’ll explore the effects of word choice and sentence structure; we’ll talk about “show, don’t tell,” and how memory becomes fiction and so much more.

All levels of writers are invited to participate in this small, friendly class. But size is limited, so register early.
