Photo of "ex"Creating compelling characters is more than completing a dossier or writing a character description. Like any human being—real or imagined—each character can be compelling once you know the stuff they’re made of and what motivates them. To create characters readers will care about you must get beneath the generalities to discover the deeper, individual qualities, quirks and desires. This workshop will show you how. Bring characters from your work-in-progress or create new and interesting characters through the exercises we’ll do together. For all levels of fiction and nonfiction writers.

In this series of monthly workshops, we’ll explore the many and varied aspects of creative writing from the writer’s voice (what is it, how do you find it, and what do you do with it once you’ve discovered it?) to elements of style (sentences and other structures, telling details, show and tell), to questions of craft (plot vs. character, description vs. action, narrative strategies) and other literary nooks and crannies. Each workshop will include examples from noted writers, in-class exercises, lively dialogue exchanges and an opportunity to work with other writers in a supportive, friendly community.
