“If you’re going to have a character appear in a story long enough to sell a newspaper, he’d better be real enough that you can smell his breath,” said Ford Maddox Ford. From the detective’s sidekick to the superstar’s maid to the nosy neighbor, minor characters play major roles in stories and movies. In this class, we’ll show you how minor characters can build structural tensions, act as a “foil” for the protagonist, deepen plot, add comic relief and much more. By the end of class, you’ll have written two to three irresistible scenes that invite seemingly insignificant characters to the VIP section of your imagination. Beginning and experienced writers welcome.
