Though neither Jim Ruland nor I are poets, we’ll read our work at this summer arts cultural event. The work of merging local artist Gustavo Zamarripa will be on exhibit in the museum. The event will be catered by Evolution. Author and performance poet Michael Klam hosts the event.

Jim Ruland is the author of the short story collection Big Lonesome and curator of the irreverent reading series Vermin on the Mount, now in its eighth year. He teaches at San Diego Writers, Ink and writes the book review column “The Floating Library” for San Diego CityBeat. A veteran of the Navy, he lives in San Diego with his wife, the visual artist Nuvia Crisol Guerra.

Local emerging artist Gustavo Zamarripa will exhibit his latest pieces. A student of Brian Dick, Zamarripa’s work ranges from installation to painting to stencil and line art. He is also a fine cook.

Evolution Fast Food is the only San Diego drive-thru restaurant offering a healthy, delicious, vegetarian and vegan menu. Evolution’s mission is to improve the world with delicious, nutritious fast food that is good for you and good for the earth.

Following the reading, there will be open mic for writers or painters who would like to share a few pieces of their work. Please contact host, Michael Klam, with any questions:  619-957-3264 (cell) or 619-236-0011 (museum). Writers or artists who would like to read on the open mic can sign up ahead of time at mkklam@gmail.com or sign in on the night of the show.

The next Poetry & Art Series 2012 will feature SDSU’s Poetry International and the Border Voices Poetry Project.
