Free Workshops
A particular and specific scent can transport us back and back and back through memory to an otherwise inaccessible place—childhood, where stories await the moment of attention to bring them to life. These free writing workshops will provide that moment of attention.
olfactory memoirsGenerative Workshop – Week 1 (3 hours)
Using the sense of smell as an entry point, participants will explore childhood memories through brief writing exercises. Guided by the simple rules of writing practice, not worrying about the “rules” and with the freedom to write anything that shows up, we’ll get the first drafts of our stories on the page. Prompts and story starts will help us begin. Writing tips and techniques will help us along the way.
Revise and Present Workshop – Week 2 (3 hours)
In this workshop, participants will bring their original stories to receive feedback and suggestions for revision. This read and critique session will help writers strengthen their stories and hone them for presentation.
The Olfactory Memoirs project is sponsored by San Diego Writers, Ink through the Community Foundation’s Creative Catalyst program. Scent Artist Brian Goeltzenleuchter created the project whose purpose is to work with community members “to identify a topic that engages their collective memory and challenges them to approach it using the sense of smell.”The final presentation will be a  literary reading that is choreographed to coincide with an orchestrated delivery of artist-made fragrances. These writing workshops are where the stories are generated.
