What if the story of Little Red Riding Hood were told from the perspective of the Big Bad Wolf? Imagine how that opportunist Cinderella would be described by her step-sisters. Who’s the fairest of them all? It all depends on your point of view. Of all the elements of writing fiction, point of view (POV) seems to cause the most head scratching. First person? Third person close? Third person omniscient? God? What’s the difference in all these POV permutations and what difference does it make anyhow? In this three-session course, we’ll examine what all these terms mean and explore examples that illustrate the various uses of point of view and why they’re effective. In-class exercises will help students learn how to choose the point of view that best serves the story they’re writing.
