The story must be told, how will you tell it?

Narrative strategy is how the writer chooses to tell the story and what techniques or elements she uses for maximum narrative impact. In this workshop, we’ll explore aspects of narrative choices such as form and genre, plot structure, point of view, narrative time and psychic distance, and a few other decisions we must make along the way. We’ll review examples from published work and try our hand at various techniques through writing exercises. This workshop is for writers who have works in progress but want to learn more about narrative structure and for those who want to dip a toe in narrative possibilities.

This workshop is another in the Voice Lessons Series, half-day workshops on Style, Craft and Techniques of Creative Writing

In this series of occasional workshops, we’ll explore the many and varied aspects of creative writing from the writer’s voice (what is it, how do you find it, and what do you do with it once you’ve discovered it?) to elements of style (sentences and other structures, telling details, show and tell), to questions of craft (plot vs. character, description vs. action, narrative strategies) and other literary nooks and crannies. Each workshop will include examples from noted writers, in-class exercises, lively dialogue exchanges and an opportunity to work with other writers in a supportive, friendly community.
