New Year’s Resolutions: Bah Humbug!

Who keeps them anyhow? I can’t even find my list from last year, but I’m sure it included: “Finish novel, exercise daily, go to bed earlier, get up earlier, make budget, stick to budget,” and on an on, ad infinitum. The same general notes as 2012 and countless years previous.

Truth is, I’m not very good at New Year’s Resolutions and I bet you’re not either. In fact, I read somewhere that by mid-February 70% of us have broken 80% of our New Year’s Resolutions. We make ’em, we break ’em and then we feel bad about ourselves.

Instead of resolutions, I’m sending out my intentions for 2014 to whatever benevolent presence might be listening.

  • To honor my creative urges and listen to my deepest longings.
  • To bless the voices in my head and ask them to wait outside while I do the work I am called to do.
  • To be open to wild imaginings and receptive to the charm of the ordinary.
  • To keep a place prepared for the Muse, to be present so she will know where to find me.
  • To find courage to write what wants to be written and patience to give whatever time is needed to write it.
  • To remember that creativity is a gift generously given and that I have a responsibility to use it.
  • To acknowledge that what I create is a way of giving back to the Universe.
  • To say thank you thank you thank you.

What about you? Same old, same old or did you come up with something new? Or do you even bother?

Happy 2014,

Judy

  1. so i got somthing to say i dont care if its on subject or out subject.just about the outgoing 2013 and the newcomer 2014 .
this life its like a book or a diary every day you fill a gap or an empty in it with what happened to you .so 2013 was and old page i read it all ;i learnt something new , i did some mistakes. and highlighted new concepts ,experiencies i would comeback to check it out again oneday maybe in 2014,2015,or 2018,or my sons after me “who knows!”.
any way we are 2014 ,we are ready for some challenges to face. im not afraid im older enough .its enough looking back .i will do whatever i can . if not this year , the one after .or if i couldnt .its like that its better me to dont do it because it might harm me “who knows!”.
all in all .we are humans and humans are not perfect .we have just to do what we have to do.do our days as it should be.dont be anxious about what will come.ands fell sure ans secure if we do good things ;good things will come back to us .

  2. I like these! Especially this one: To find courage to write what wants to be written

I feel like I should be working on my book, but instead essays/ideas for articles keep coming! Maybe I need to follow where the creativity is going naturally!

    • Hi Kandace. Thanks for commenting on the blog post. This is the thing for creative people: the ideas never stop coming and thank the Muse for that. The drawback, of course, is that if we follow every idea we may never complete anything. I try to keep a running file of notes for ideas in a notebook (some people do it on the computer), adding to them as they come, but meantime, set aside time to work on one project that I want to complete.

Is your book a “should”? or something you really want to complete?

  3. Yeah, Linda. Telling the voices of the critics et al to –um– hasn’t worked real well for me. They just get more rebellious and challenging. “Oh yeah?” Blessing them is a little of a surprise; they’re not use to that.
